Afghanistan Culture

Islam rules the mindset, lifestyle and almost every bit of Afghan Culture. However, the Culture of Afghanistan can’t be entirely put in watertight compartment naming it as Islamic Culture. There are various shades of other cultural influences in different part of Afghanistan. We can see pre-Islamic traditions, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Zoroastrianism mirrored in their various practices.

Afghanistan Culture saw many phases like Indian Culture. There were mostly the warring times in Afghanistan. Because of the Arab Muslim conquests major portion of Afghanistan exhibits Islamic norms and mannerisms. As Afghanistan served a pathway for its neighbors like Pakistan, Iran, and the Middle East, therefore it got some elements from their culture making it rich all the more.

Art and Entertainment in Afghanistan

Thanks to the cultural influences that led some development in the Art and Entertainment in Afghanistan. Earlier Art was the realm of only “men”. So society was mostly patriarchal. But with the changing times, women started entering the stage.

Gandhara School of Art is the primitive art practice followed in Afghanistan. It is known that this was practiced somewhat in between the 1st and 7th century and got its advent can be traced back to Greco-Buddhist art. Coming to 1900’s Westernization crept in the culture of Afghanistan and many museums started getting built. Kabul Museum is one of the famous museums in Afghanistan.

Besides Music and Poetry that are almost the basic features of all cultures, Afghanistan boasts of its rich Carpet manufacturing since ages. You can spot an Afghan carpet by its specialized patterns and shades.

Music of Afghanistan

From the year 1980, the people of Afghanistan had been subjugated to oppression. Music, therefore, had been repressed in the country. The country also limited the permission of recording for foreigners. Till the year 1990, Instrumental and social music was completely banned by the Taliban government. Afghan musicians did not want to stop their music, so to make their trade run the composers and singers fled to other countries. Hence, Islamabad, Karachi and Peshawar (cities of Pakistan) became the main central point for circulation of Afghan music. Although, for a long period Kabul was the cultural capital but somehow, the foreigners preferred to consider the city of Heart, whose music is close to Iranian music. Lyrics in Pashto and Persian languages are mainly used within the country. Afghan people also like to hear Hindi songs of Bollywood films.

Poetry of Afghanistan

Earlier Poetry of Afghanistan was mostly written in the Persian language. The art of poetry is very famous among the Afghan people. Afghans are well known for especially Ghazal and Charbeiti which were exclusive to the Persian language.

The poetry of Charbeiti mainly expresses love, war and youth in the life of the poet. Oral representation of the poems leads to its diverse versions.

There are many famous singers in the country such as Ahsan Aman, Ahmad Zahir, Abdullah Muzorai, Khan Karabagai, Mangal, Naghma, Ustad Awal Mir, Beltoon, Waheed Qasmi, Noor Muhammad Katawazai etc.

Dance and Jokes are another exclusive part of their culture. On any happy event the most famous dance ‘Attan’ is performed by the men and women, with slight differences.

There are contest held for telling jokes on functions and get together in various ways.

Food of Afghanistan

Many types of crops are grown in Afghanistan. The staple crops of this nation are wheat, maize, barley, and rice, however rice is the main. Afghan foods are spicy however, they are very delicious. Grapes of Afghanistan are very popular. There are four categories of foods:-

1. Vegetarian Dishes of Afghan

Spicy Eggplant Salad, Afghan Bread with Spinach, Samoosi Yirakot (stuffed vegetable turnovers), Boolawnee (Fried Leek Pastries), Ginger-Tamarind Eggplant, Sabse Borani, Vegetable Fritters, Lantil Stuffed Peppers, Eggplant with Yoghurt Sauce, Chakha Eggplant.

2. Non-Vegetarian Dishes of Afghan

Korma Sabzee, korma Nakhod( Meatballs and Chick-Peas), Lamb Kabab, Aush( Noodles with pulses, meat and Yoghurt), Mourgh(Afghan Chicken), Qabili Pilau( Lamb and Yellow rice with carrots), Meatballs with noodles tossed in yogurt, Chelo nachodo(Chick-pea stew with rice), Samboosak(Meat pies), Afghan Lamb with Spinach, Boulanee, Khoresht-e Seib.

3. Sauces and Rubs of Afghan

Afghan Spice Rubs, Coriander Sauce, Fish and Meat Rubs, Hawayei, Meat Sauce, Korma Sauce, Salad Dressing, Coriander Chutney, Kabab Sauce

4. Desserts of Afghan
